New York Times: Unlike Others, U.S. Defends Freedom to Offend in Speech

Really interesting commentary into how they manage free speech in other countries.

(As always, BugMeNot will get you past their registration)

5/24/08 03:32 pm - You, too, can abuse Windows Mobile 6

So, now my phone can:
- SSH in to my home system from anywhere (with port forwarding)
- RDP to my desktop (it's as terrible as it sounds)
- Play YouTube videos (saved FLV or streaming)
- Play any video from my MythTV box (hello Bob Ross on a cell phone)
- Act as my RSA token for work
- Log on to Skype
- Read any Plucker document (I have the World Factbook and a lot of Tom Paine)
- Use Google Maps (no GPS :-( )
- Pull from my three main email accounts
- Play Nintendo games (working on SNES)
- BlueJack and sniff for 802.11 access points
- Act as a wireless access point to share my cell data connection (easily the best one of all)

Outside of the normal stuff you can do with Pocket Internet Explorer (Facebook, Google, control MythTV, read news sites...). Oh, and I can call people with it.

No, the battery doesn't last long at all.

Fire department response time: 2 minutes.
Living next to the police and fire stations has its perks!

5/1/08 11:43 pm - Absolut Mexican-American War

Strange Maps: An Absolut Mexico

This is fantastic on so many levels, if only to remind Americans where the Southwest came from. (The map assumes 54-40-or-fight succeeded, which is less likely given such a change in geography).

4/30/08 07:59 pm - Spoilers

Also, while I'm at it, political prediction:
We will look back on this upcoming election seeing Clinton as the Nader of 2000.

Prove me wrong!

4/30/08 07:08 pm - Article: Hayden's take on the upcoming century

WSJ.com: China Not 'Inevitable Enemy' Of U.S., CIA Director Says

I can't find a full transcript, but this guy started spouting gold:

Demographic changes, a rising China, and the evolving trans-Atlantic alliance will shape American security and foreign policy through the middle of this century, Gen. Hayden said. He called on Americans to learn the languages and cultures needed to meet the new challenges, in the same way the U.S. developed its Soviet expertise during the Cold War.

"Large parts of the world -- including those that will hold more sway in the future -- do not share all of our ideas," Gen. Hayden said. "While we cherish and live our own values, we must know and appreciate those of others."

4/20/08 10:02 pm - Flickr mobile!

Apparently there is a Windows Mobile LJ client. That I did not think of looking is kind of embarassing.

Anyway, Facebook's mobile upload is broken so I started a Flickr account. If you can't guess the username then I don't think we can be friends anymore.

4/11/08 09:36 pm - Here's your update

I have severe carpal tunnel, so this is short.

The guitar on "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window" is unbelievable and I can't stop listening to it.

Also, if you aren't watching and enjoying season four of Battlestar Galactica you are committing a grand crime against American television.
